Pillars of Partnership

Defining Our Pillars of Partnership

At the St. Joseph Fund (SJF), we believe “partnership” is more than a transaction. It is a relationship grounded in trust, purpose, and, above all, love. We know meaningful change happens when partnerships center on building hopeful, healthy, and resilient communities. In Alaska, California, Montana, Oregon, Washington, SJF collaborates with nonprofits and community leaders to make this vision a reality.

Our approach to partnership centers on four pillars, each designed to address systemic challenges and foster meaningful, long-lasting change:

  • Centering Racial and Social Justice – We work with underserved and under-resourced communities most affected by racial and social inequities. Following a community-led justice framework, we support marginalized groups , such as Black, Indigenous, People of Color, and others, to create pathways to equity.
  • Advancing an Equity Lens – Every action and decision at SJF seeks to remove barriers and reduce harm. This involves collaborating with communities to assess and improve our processes and ensure that our resources are distributed for the collective good.
  • Building Community Power – We support communities in building their power structures. We believe in the potential of grassroots leadership and help mobilize coalitions and collaboratives to create transformative social, economic, and political change.
  • Systems and Upstream Work – Beyond immediate needs, we focus on addressing root causes. This means supporting structural changes rather than short-term solutions and moving toward sustainable practices that build resilience and justice in the long term.

Our partnership model isn’t built on a one-size-fits-all structure. Instead, we focus on the unique needs and strengths of each community. We ensure our partnerships are impactful and sustainable through:

  • Exploration and Co-Creation – Instead of scaling pre-packaged solutions, we dive deep into each partnership, exploring and co-creating solutions alongside the community. This approach allows us to adapt to each partner’s needs and invites collaboration.
  • Non-Transactional Relationships – SJF’s partnerships are not defined solely by financial transactions. We engage with our partners as peers, creating a space where communities feel empowered rather than obligated.
  • Iterative and Adaptive Support – Our grantmaking is flexible and phased, allowing us to adjust as partnerships evolve. By responding to emerging needs and adapting our support, we ensure that we always align with our partners’ goals.
  • Healing-Centered Engagement – We value the well-being of those working on the ground. Our approach includes creating spaces for joy, renewal, and connection, recognizing that holistically supported leaders can better serve their communities.

Our philosophy reflects a trust-based philanthropic approach that values patience, transparency, and community wisdom. We invest in capacity-building initiatives, such as infrastructure support, leadership training, and policy development, enabling organizations to achieve their missions sustainably. Our support doesn’t end with grantmaking. We remain present, whether through ongoing dialogue or convening spaces for collective learning.

Every SJF partnership begins with a conversation and grows into a long-term commitment rooted in love and mutual respect. By centering community expertise and experiences, we strive to create a foundation for communities to flourish, ensuring that each partnership not only brings immediate benefits but also builds resilience for the future.
