Rooted In Love, the St. Joseph Fund is dedicated to strengthening community power within grassroots organizations doing the hardest, most healing work in our communities. The Black and Indigenous Birth Justice Collaborative brings together a network of birthing partners across Washington state through peer-to-peer learning, solidarity, and healing. The Collaborative enables collective analysis of the experiences and challenges faced by Black and Indigenous birthing individuals and birth workers.

When birthing parents are empowered, their children begin their lives on a successful path.

Amplifying the Work at Our Inaugural Birth Justice Film Festival

This past year, the Collaborative’s co-leads envisioned something different. They didn’t want another written report to show the impact of their work. They wanted a gathering where community, story, and creativity could speak for themselves.

The Birth Justice Film Fest brought together community partners and funders for a screening of short documentary films capturing each partner’s work, filmed and hosted by videographer Terence Jeffrey Santos of Filipinotown Magazine. Partners introduced themselves in their own words and their own way. Some shared the humble origins of their organizations, and others invited children to the stage to sing.
