Shared Commitment to Our Communities
Guest Post – Jason Lacsamana, Director, Programs and Partnerships
A critical point stood out for me in a recent reflection by Erik Wexler, Providence’s CEO, on his vision for Providence St. Joseph Health. Erik spoke about Providence’s commitment to addressing not just physical health but also individuals’ mental, emotional, social, and spiritual well-being. The call to eliminate persistent inequities in systems resonates and aligns with the work of the St. Joseph Fund, Providence’s grantmaking foundation.
At SJF, we recognize that inequities are deeply rooted in systemic barriers that disproportionately impact marginalized and disinvested communities. We believe everyone deserves the opportunity to live their healthiest, most whole, and happiest life. That’s why our work prioritizes those who are the furthest from justice. Our approach addresses the root cause of these inequities, emphasizing the social determinants of health, fostering community healing and resilience, building the capacity of organizations, and empowering individuals to advocate for meaningful change.
Understanding and addressing the systems, conditions, and power dynamics within communities is the most effective way to support an individual’s well-being. Our partnerships are long-term, collaborative, and holistic, not transactional. By listening to those with lived experience and walking alongside local leaders and organizations, we work to ensure that mental health support, community healing, and opportunities for spiritual and culturally competent care are integrated into broader initiatives. This holistic approach not only improves outcomes but also strengthens the fabric of our communities.
Removing inequities demands action over intention. That’s why SJF actively supports programs that address disparities head-on, empowering communities to take charge of their well-being. As we continue this work, we are steadfast in our commitment to equity and justice, ensuring that every person, regardless of their circumstances, has access to the resources they need to thrive.
Through a shared vision and collaboration, we can build a future in which equitable and just systems that uplift and elevate are not just aspirations but realities for our communities.
