Finding Our Voices – The Power of Storytelling
Guest Post – Gabriela Robles, Chief Executive
Have you ever hesitated to speak up, wondering if your story mattered? For years, I thought finding my voice meant perfecting the right words or waiting for the perfect moment. But I’ve come to realize that it’s less about speaking flawlessly and more about embracing the experiences that shape us and the authenticity that we convey when we speak from our hearts.
I was reminded of this recently while watching my eight-year-old daughter, Giuliana, try out for her school play. We’ve always known that she loves to sing, but I didn’t fully grasp the strength and beauty in her voice until this audition. Singing a song from Shrek, she captured her teacher’s heart and my attention. It was a very special moment, where I saw her confidence grow exponentially in those few minutes.
In my work, I’ve seen firsthand how personal stories and connections drive real change. Often, the most meaningful solutions began with someone bravely sharing their lived experience. Even more so, we underestimate the value of our narratives. We assume others have more important things to say (or sing) or that our stories are too ordinary to make a difference. But the truth is, our voices shape the world around us.
So how do we find our voices and gather the courage to stand on a stage and share them? We should begin by acknowledging that our experiences are valid. Start by sharing a story with someone who needs to hear it. Write it down. Advocate for a cause that aligns with your values. Your voice, whether spoken, written, or shown through action, can inspire, connect, and create change – just as Giuliana’s voice did for me.
I’d love to hear from you. What’s a moment in your life when you found your voice? And if you haven’t yet, what’s holding you back?
